Rayo Vallecano made club history by defeating RC Strasbourg Alsace 1–0 in France to complete a 2–0 aggregate victory and secure their place in the UEFA Europa Conference League final for the first time ever.
The side from Vallecas once again delivered a disciplined and fearless European performance, repeating their first-leg scoreline to eliminate Strasbourg and continue a remarkable continental journey that has captured the imagination of supporters across Spain.
Mike Penders of Strasbourg caught the eye with a 9.6 rating, making him the best player on the pitch.
Brazilian forward Alemao proved decisive yet again, scoring the only goal of the match in the 42nd minute after reacting quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area. It was his fifth goal of the Conference League campaign and another crucial contribution on a historic night for the club.
Although possession remained balanced at 51% to 49%, Rayo Vallecano looked the more dangerous side throughout the match, producing 22 attempts compared to Strasbourg’s 11 and constantly threatening on the counterattack.
The home supporters inside Stade de la Meinau grew increasingly frustrated as Strasbourg struggled to create clear opportunities despite needing goals to stay alive in the tie. The French side improved after the break, but Rayo’s defensive organisation and composure continued to frustrate Gary O’Neil’s young squad.
Rayo could have extended their lead further in the second half, only to be denied by several excellent saves from Strasbourg goalkeeper Mike Penders.
Late drama arrived in stoppage time when Strasbourg were awarded a penalty, offering one final chance to revive the tie. However, goalkeeper Augusto Batalla produced a huge save to deny Julio Enciso and seal a famous European victory for the visitors.
There were five yellow cards shown in a tense semi-final clash filled with intensity and emotion.
For Rayo Vallecano, this achievement marks the biggest moment in the club’s history. A team built on passion, identity and relentless spirit has now reached a first-ever European final, transforming Vallecas into one of football’s great underdog stories this season.
Rayo Vallecano will now face Crystal Palace in the UEFA Europa Conference League final in Leipzig on 27 May, with both clubs aiming to win their first major European trophy.
