Grêmio were 45 minutes from relief and finished the night hearing their own supporters call them shameless. Leading 2–1 at the interval at Arena do Grêmio, Renato Portaluppi's side came apart after the break. Kaio Jorge completed a hat-trick, Walter Kannemann was sent off and Cruzeiro left Porto Alegre as 4–2 winners.
For the home side it is now seven league games without a win, and the mood around the club has turned from anxious to openly hostile. For Cruzeiro, the second half was a statement: three goals, no answer, and 51 points in the race for a direct Copa Libertadores place.
Carlos Vinícius penalty sparks Cruzeiro fury
The first flashpoint came in the 17th minute. Referee João Vitor Gobi awarded Grêmio a penalty when Zé Lucas pulled Francis Amuzu, a decision Cruzeiro protested heavily. Carlos Vinícius sent Otávio the wrong way into the bottom-left corner.
It ended an 11-match personal drought for the striker and took him to seven league goals this season in 26 appearances. The lead, though, survived only six minutes.
Kaio Jorge took a vertical pass from Matheus Pereira and used his body to shield the ball before beating Gustavo Martins. He then fired a low, angled shot across the keeper and into the far corner. It was the first in a series of duels with Martins that would shape the evening.
Cruzeiro's grievance grew in the 32nd minute, when Diego Caito barged Kaio Jorge in the back and play was waved on. Seconds later Gerson hit the crossbar.
Grêmio went in front again anyway. In the 41st minute Cristian Pavón struck first time with his left foot from the edge of the penalty area, and a deflection off João Marcelo carried the ball in. It was Pavón's third league goal of the season in 24 appearances.
Kaio Jorge completes hat-trick to turn the night
The second half was three minutes old when the game swung back. Matheus Pereira slipped a through ball between the centre-backs, and Kaio Jorge, running into the box, beat Weverton with a placed, side-footed finish.
His third, in the 61st minute, came after a long ball from the back. Right-back William released a long diagonal ball from behind the halfway line. Kaio Jorge chased it down, beat Gustavo Martins for pace and strength and slotted past the advancing Weverton.
It was all simple. Cruzeiro, with 60% of the ball, simply kept finding the one player Grêmio did not know how to stop, and Kaio Jorge punished them every time.
The numbers around him are striking. Kaio Jorge now has 10 league goals in 20 appearances this season and has scored in three of Cruzeiro's last six league games. He also repeated his hat-trick against Grêmio from a 4–1 win in 2025. That took his career tally against the Porto Alegre club to 10 goals in nine matches, and no opponent has conceded more to him.
Brazilian national team scouts were in the stands to watch it.
Walter Kannemann red card deepens Grêmio collapse
Whatever slim route back Grêmio had closed in the 73rd minute. Kannemann was first shown a yellow card for a tackle on Kaio Jorge. Assistant referee Bruno Boschilia then alerted Gobi that the defender had turned and made a clear 'theft' gesture with his hand towards the officials. The yellow card was replaced by a direct red, and Kannemann tried to confront the referee before he went.
Seven minutes later the visitors added a fourth. Gerson flicked on a corner, and João Marcelo controlled the ball on his chest and blasted it into the net. It was his second league goal of the season in 13 appearances.
By then the Arena had turned on its own team. In front of a crowd of 31,546, home supporters repeatedly chanted 'time sem vergonha' ('shameless team') as the lead slipped away and again as the fourth went in.
The statistics make the collapse look stranger, not simpler. Grêmio, with only 40% of possession, outshot Cruzeiro 17 to 13, and both sides managed six efforts on target. Only one team got four goals from it. Cruzeiro have now scored in each of their last 11 league games and scored 24 goals across that run.
Renato Portaluppi turns on Grêmio board as pressure builds
Renato Portaluppi was described as downcast and defensive in his press conference. He turned on the club's board and recruitment department to complain about the quality of his squad. Press reports also spoke of a tense dressing-room discussion in which he offered to step down.
The national press described Grêmio as sinking into despair. Seven matches without a win, four of them defeats, have left them 18th on 31 points, and the arithmetic of the run-in is turning against them.
Nor does this fixture offer refuge. Of the last six meetings, Cruzeiro have won five and drawn the other.
Cruzeiro head the other way, praised for their resilience and clinical attacking play. On 51 points they are firmly in the chase for direct Copa Libertadores qualification, and in Kaio Jorge they have a forward Grêmio simply could not contain.
