Sixteen seconds in, Romelu Lukaku and Abdülkerim Bardakcı were already trading shoves. By the final whistle, riot police were on the pitch at Rams Park Stadyumu, two players had been shown post-match red cards, and Galatasaray had beaten Fenerbahçe in a derby that never once cooled down.
Between those two scenes, Victor Osimhen decided it. His pair of first-half goals put the Süper Lig leaders 2–0 up at the break. İrfan Kahveci's overhead kick made the last half-hour nervous, and the 2–1 defeat leaves Fenerbahçe fifth and six points adrift after just nine rounds.
Osimhen strikes twice as Galatasaray suffocate Fenerbahçe
The opener came on 29 minutes. Barış Yılmaz played a square pass to the edge of the penalty arc, and Osimhen gathered it before sweeping a low left-footed drive inside the near post.
Osimhen scored his second a minute before the interval, from a scrappier situation but just as clinically. Ederson punched clear an Ismail Jakobs throw-in, Davinson Sánchez lashed the loose ball back towards goal, and Osimhen redirected it past the goalkeeper with a glancing header. He now has 8 league goals in 7 appearances this season and has scored in 4 of Galatasaray's last 6 league games.
The half-time lead was no accident. Fenerbahçe did not manage a single shot in the opening 45 minutes, making Galatasaray the first side this season to shut them out that completely before the break in a league fixture. The visitors' grievances were about decisions rather than chances. Mason Greenwood went down after contact from Jakobs, with no penalty and no VAR intervention. A late flashpoint between Osimhen and Archie Brown then ended with an offside call rather than the disciplinary action Fenerbahçe demanded.
Over the full 90 minutes, Galatasaray had 62% of the ball, 23 shots to Fenerbahçe's 4 and 10 corners to 4. Those are the numbers of a home side that spent most of its time in the opposition half. For most of the first hour, the only suspense was whether the margin would grow.
Osimhen denied a hat-trick as Kahveci strikes back
Osimhen believed he had completed his hat-trick on 51 minutes with another header, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Eleven minutes later, that decision looked enormous.
On 62 minutes, Kerem Aktürkoğlu launched a long ball forward. The former Galatasaray winger had been given a fiery reception at his old club's stadium. Oğuz Aydın headed the ball down, and Kahveci met it with a spectacular bicycle kick past Uğurcan Çakır. It was his 3rd league goal in 8 appearances this season, and he has now scored in 3 of Fenerbahçe's last 6 league games.
The goal changed the noise more than the pattern. Galatasaray kept pressing, and in the 67th minute they appealed furiously for a penalty when Aleksey Batrakov went down under a challenge from Matteo Guendouzi. Batrakov was making his first appearance in the Intercontinental Derby. Atilla Karaoğlan stuck with his decision to play on after a VAR check.
And yet the visitors almost escaped with a point. In the 90th minute, Mario Lemina cleared Milan Škriniar's header off the line. Fenerbahçe finished with 3 shots on target from only 4 attempts, against Galatasaray's 8 on target. From almost nothing, they produced a goal and a goal-line scare.
Aktürkoğlu and Sallai cause full-time brawl
The final whistle did not end the contest so much as relocate it. Aktürkoğlu grabbed Roland Sallai by the shirt, and players from both benches piled in. Bardakcı and Brown ended up wrestling on the ground.
Stadium security and riot police had to enter the pitch to separate the squads and escort the Fenerbahçe players off. Karaoğlan then showed red cards to Bardakcı and Brown and booked Aktürkoğlu and Sallai. Fenerbahçe had already collected 5 yellow cards during play, to Galatasaray's 2.
The symmetry is hard to ignore: Bardakcı was at the centre of both the first confrontation and the last. Aktürkoğlu started the move for Fenerbahçe's goal. He ended his return to a sold-out Rams Park with an act that caused chaos.
Galatasaray stretch clear as pressure mounts on Kartal
For Galatasaray, this was a third straight league win and a sign of how settled they look. They sit top on 22 points. Their home unbeaten run in the Süper Lig now reaches 40 matches, with 32 wins and 8 draws, stretching back to May 2024. It also followed a 4–2 win at Lille in Europe only days earlier.
Nine rounds in, a six-point cushion over Fenerbahçe is not decisive. But it is the kind of lead that changes how a rival has to approach every week that follows.
Okan Buruk has now beaten Fenerbahçe 7 times in 12 derbies across all competitions as Galatasaray manager. Only Fatih Terim and Gündüz Kılıç had previously recorded at least five Süper Lig derby wins over Fenerbahçe as Galatasaray coach, and Buruk now joins them.
For Fenerbahçe, the questions are sharper. A 6–0 defeat to Aston Villa and a 2–2 draw with Slavia Praha in Europe had already led the Turkish press to frame this trip as an ultimatum for Kartal. A first half without a shot, a defeat to the leaders and a six-point gap to the top will not quieten that conversation.
