Beşiktaş were trailing, already a midfielder short and, before the end, a man down. Crystal Palace still left Istanbul without the win they had held in their hands. Junior Olaitan's 73rd-minute equaliser earned a 2–2 Europa League draw that keeps Vincenzo Italiano's side unbeaten in the league stage.
This was a night that refused to settle. Palace had a goal disallowed inside six minutes, and the hosts led on the stroke of half-time. The visitors then scored twice in four minutes after the break, before Olaitan's strike and Ümit Akdağ's straight red card. All of it played out in an electric Tüpraş Stadium, where the home support stayed loud from first whistle to last.
VAR denies Mateta before Ndidi strikes for Beşiktaş
Crystal Palace thought they had the opening goal in the sixth minute, when Jean-Philippe Mateta tapped in from close range after a cross went uncleared. Referee Danny Makkelie ruled it out after a VAR check found a marginal offside in the build-up. The first big decision of the night went the home side's way.
Italiano had made eight changes after a domestic derby defeat, and his reshaped team held the ball without carving much open. Then, in the 39th minute, Fabio Miretti went off with a shoulder injury that will keep him out for the next few weeks. That is another midfield absence alongside the recently sidelined Orkun Kökçü.
Six minutes later, Beşiktaş were ahead. Salih Özcan sent a pass from deep inside his own half over the Palace defensive line, and Wilfred Ndidi ran into the gap between the centre-backs. From around 12 yards on the left side of the area, he drove a low left-footed finish past Walter Benítez into the far bottom corner.
Ndidi celebrated by applauding himself, and he made no secret of why: "Aslında kendimi tebrik ediyordum, bravo diyordum kendime." In his own words, he was congratulating himself and saying bravo to himself for anticipating the opening.
Pino and Mateta turn the game for Crystal Palace
Palace needed six minutes of the second half and a second look from VAR to level. Yeremy Pino moved the ball out to Anan Khalaili on the right, kept running, and slid in to turn Khalaili's low cross past Alexander Nübel. The assistant referee flagged for offside, but a lengthy VAR review overturned the call and the goal stood.
It was Pino's fourth goal in all competitions this season, from 11 appearances. He has now found the net in four of Palace's last six matches.
Four minutes later the visitors were in front, and Beşiktaş had opened the door themselves. Tiago Djaló's underhit backpass toward Nübel never reached him. Mateta pounced, carried the ball into the left side of the area and lashed a powerful left-footed drive into the top corner.
On his first start since the opening weekend of the campaign, the striker finally had a goal that counted. He has now scored in three of Palace's last six matches.
That burst captured the shape of the evening. Beşiktaş finished with 59% of the possession, yet Palace had eight shots to their five and three on target to their two. The hosts had the ball; Palace had the sharper ideas with it.
Olaitan strikes back before Akdağ red card
Olaitan's equaliser came from a scrap. Khalaili headed a ball clear and it dropped roughly 22 yards from goal. Olaitan, on as a substitute, collected it, skipped between two defenders on the edge of the box and drilled a low right-footed shot that skidded into the bottom-left corner.
It was the first European goal of his professional career. It also meant Beşiktaş had scored with both of their shots on target. That was ruthless finishing from a side that had otherwise struggled to turn its share of the ball into chances.
The lift lasted four minutes. In the 77th, Makkelie showed Akdağ a straight red card for serious foul play after a reckless, heavy challenge on Palace substitute Jørgen Strand Larsen, who was forced off injured.
It was the defender's first official start for Beşiktaş since joining in the summer, and it left the home side down to ten for the final stretch. Palace, a man up and with more attempts across the night, could not find a third.
Italiano's patched-up Beşiktaş stay unbeaten in Europe
Turkish media praised the resilience, character and depth of Italiano's side for salvaging a point with eight changes. They also voiced mounting concern over defensive fragility and the growing list of midfield injuries. Both judgements fit the evidence: Djaló's error gifted Palace their lead, and Miretti's injury thins out a midfield already without Kökçü.
In the table, the point leaves Beşiktaş on seven points from two wins and a draw, eighth in the league stage. Since the September win over Marseille, Italiano's team have shown they can compete in Europe even when stretched. The question now is how long a thinning squad can keep it up.
For Palace, the draw halts a run of back-to-back defeats but stretches their winless sequence to three matches in all competitions. They sit 15th on four points, still chasing a knockout place. They will rue a night on which they led, played the closing stages against ten men, and still left with a single point.
