Bayern München were without Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich. Luis Díaz was nursing a knock on the bench, and Vincent Kompany was on the touchline despite illness and a hip problem. They still came within eight minutes of beating Arsenal. Declan Rice's 82nd-minute equaliser settled a breathless Champions League night at the Allianz Arena at 2–2, and left both camps unsure whether to celebrate a point or mourn two.

A sold-out crowd of 75,000 was there, with Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp watching from the stands, and the game refused to give anyone a tidy verdict. The sides finished with five shots on target each and 13 attempts against 14. The final score was the only honest summary of the night.

D. Rice8.2

Rated 8.2, Declan Rice was Arsenal's engine at the Allianz Arena, giving his side drive and purpose when the night threatened to slip away. His goal turned a defeat into a point and kept Arsenal unbeaten on one of Europe's hardest away trips.

Arsenal's evening soured before anyone scored. Bukayo Saka collapsed inside the opening 10 minutes with a non-contact quad injury and limped off. "It doesn't look good," Mikel Arteta said afterwards. Those words may outlast anything that happened on the scoreboard.

Eze goal survives VAR's offside reversal

Arsenal led on 25 minutes, and for a moment it looked as though they didn't. Martin Ødegaard threaded a measured pass into the left side of the box, and Eberechi Eze ran onto it. He slid a low finish across Manuel Neuer into the far corner, only for the on-field call to go against him for offside.

The VAR check in the 26th minute found what the flag had missed: Josip Stanišić was playing Eze onside, and the goal stood. For once the technology corrected rather than complicated. Still, the familiar ritual of a goal scored, cancelled and then reinstated drained some of the joy from it. It was Eze's second goal of the season in all competitions, in his 10th appearance.

Bayern's reply came 10 minutes later, built on the one resource they never seem to run out of. Harry Kane released Alphonso Davies on a rapid break with an incisive pass, and Davies slid a composed finish past David Raya. Davies now has two goals in 10 appearances this season. Kane was only warming up.

Kane punishes Timber's raised arm from the spot

On 61 minutes Kane's goalbound shot was blocked by Jurriën Timber, who had slid across in the area with his arm raised. Davide Massa pointed to the spot, and there was little to argue about. A sliding defender with an arm in the air is a gift no referee is obliged to refuse.

Kane drove the penalty home for his 10th goal in 11 appearances this season. He has now scored in 10 consecutive Champions League games, one short of Cristiano Ronaldo's all-time tournament record of 11. Against Arsenal alone he has 16 career goals in 23 matches, a record that starts to look personal.

Yet this was a strange kind of home performance. Bayern had just 42% of the ball in their own stadium and still matched Arsenal's efforts on target. Klopp's live television critique took aim at their pressing and shape without the ball, and the depleted hosts often looked to be surviving rather than controlling. Neuer, making his 163rd Champions League appearance to match Thomas Müller's record for a German, had to be sharp. At the other end, Raya blocked a close-range Dayot Upamecano attempt.

Rice and Gyökeres rescue Arsenal late

Arsenal kept pushing, and with eight minutes left they were rewarded. Rice exchanged a sharp one-two with Viktor Gyökeres, burst into the penalty area and smashed a low strike into the far corner. It was a midfielder's run finished like a striker's.

The night still had one twist left. In stoppage time Neuer tipped a Timber effort over the bar, denying the defender his redemption and Arsenal a winner. Arsenal took two yellow cards to Bayern's none, a reminder that the visitors' control came with a cost.

Arteta was candid. "We'll take the draw, but it doesn't mean we're really happy about it because we prepared a team to win the game – you could see that from right at the beginning, with the mindset, the purpose the adventure team had to be very dominant and cause Bayern problems," he said. Kai Havertz was more generous: "I think it was a top-notch game for both sides."

Bayern stall on five points as Atlético loom

In Munich the mood was closer to irritation. Tom Bischof described it as "eher enttäuschend, dass wir nicht die drei Punkte holen", rather disappointing not to take all three points. Neuer was blunter: "Nicht unser Anspruch."

Here is the paradox. Bayern are unbeaten in 16 matches in all competitions and have scored in each of their last seven, with 27 goals in that run. Yet they sit 14th on five points after back-to-back league-phase draws. The 3-3 in Stavanger cost them Olise, and this one cost them a statement. A trip to Atlético Madrid comes next, and the room for further draws is shrinking.

Arsenal are seventh on seven points, in the upper automatic-qualification bracket. They are now unbeaten in 15 league-phase matches in this competition and in four across all competitions. Dropping points for only the second time in 12 matches this season is no crisis. Losing Saka for any length of time might be.
