Arsenal are one step closer to the Premier League title after a dramatic 1–0 victory away at West Ham in Round 36. In a tense and emotional encounter at the London Stadium, the visitors dominated large periods of the match but had to wait until the 83rd minute to finally break the deadlock through Leandro Trossard.
Mikel Arteta’s side started the game aggressively and nearly took the lead inside the opening ten minutes. Riccardo Calafiori first saw his header cleared off the line before Trossard incredibly struck both the crossbar and the post in the same attack moments later. Arsenal continued to push forward throughout the first half, creating pressure with their possession-based approach and forcing West Ham deep into their own half.
The man of the match award goes to West Ham's Konstantinos Mavropanos, who impressed throughout with a rating of 8.2.
Despite Arsenal’s dominance, West Ham gradually settled into the match and began threatening on the counterattack. Their best opportunity before the break arrived in the 45th minute when Taty Castellanos produced a powerful header, only for David Raya to respond with a superb save to keep the score level heading into halftime.
The second half became far more physical and fragmented, with fouls and stoppages disrupting the flow of the game. Arsenal thought they had a huge chance in the 69th minute after the ball struck Konstantinos Mavropanos inside the area, but VAR ruled there was no penalty despite strong appeals from the visitors. Seconds later, Gabriel’s close-range effort was somehow cleared off the line by the Greek defender in one of the key moments of the match.
West Ham also had their chances to shock the league leaders. Matheus Fernandes wasted a golden one-on-one opportunity midway through the second half, firing wide after breaking through Arsenal’s defence. That miss proved costly.
In the 83rd minute, Arsenal finally found the breakthrough. Martin Ødegaard combined brilliantly with Declan Rice before slipping the ball into the path of Leandro Trossard, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper to send the away supporters into celebration.
The drama was not over there. Deep into stoppage time, West Ham believed they had rescued a dramatic equaliser through Callum Wilson following a corner kick. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to a foul on David Raya during the build-up, preserving Arsenal’s crucial victory.
With the win, Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table on 79 points and continue to strengthen their title push. West Ham, meanwhile, stay in the relegation zone on 36 points with only a few matches left to save their season.
