A. Baena’s 42nd-minute goal turned a bruising Uruguay-Spain 2026 WC night into a 1-0 Spain win, but the result was only part of the story at Estadio Akron.

Baena decides as Spain control Uruguay

Spain had already taken command of territory and rhythm before Baena struck just before half-time. Fernando Muslera could not deal with the effort from the edge of the area, and the ball ended up in the net for the only goal of a match that Spain led 1-0 at the interval.

The scoreboard stayed narrow because the chances were thin: both sides produced only one shot on target, with Spain edging total attempts 6-5. Yet the feel of the game was not even. Spain held 67% possession, Uruguay had 33%, and the passing graphic told the same story at 552 to 227.

Elfath lets Uruguay-Spain referee anger grow

It should not be softened: referee Ismail Elfath allowed this match to become a massacre of rough challenges on Spanish players. The foul count finished 14-14, but too many Uruguay challenges looked worthy of stronger punishment, and Spain were fortunate not to see players such as Pedri, Olmo or Yamal caught in something more damaging.

Uruguay collected three yellow cards to Spain’s one, and Spain’s pressure showed in six corners to Uruguay’s one. In several spells Uruguay looked powerless, not because of a lack of quality, but because Spain were so superior in control and tempo.

Canobbio stains Uruguay chase with late red

Agustín Canobbio’s 90th-minute red card felt overdue in the context of the night. After receiving it, his reaction toward Elfath looked more like a physical attack than a protest, an ugly and unsporting end to Uruguay’s attempt to chase the game.

Canobbio’s own graphic underlined the contradiction: a 6.2 average outing, 85% passing on 11 of 13 attempts, 4 of 9 duels won and a failed dribble, all overshadowed by the direct red. Spain finished top with 7 points, unbeaten, while Uruguay were left third on 2 points.
