Ismael Saibari’s second-minute strike turned Morocco’s night into a Group C statement, sealing a 1-0 win over Scotland at Gillette Stadium. The goal was enough at full time, but the numbers around it showed why the Atlas Lions rarely looked like losing control.

Saibari jolts Scotland inside two minutes

Morocco needed only 2 minutes to land the decisive blow. Saibari ran beyond the Scottish back line, took down a well-weighted ball from Brahim Diaz and smashed his finish past Angus Gunn into the roof of the net.

It was Morocco’s fastest ever World Cup goal and the fastest goal so far at FIFA World Cup 2026. For Scotland, Steve Clarke’s own verdict matched the pattern: the start was “terrible”, even if the response after that kept them alive.

Morocco control Scotland with the ball

The score stayed narrow, but Morocco’s grip was clear in the match statistics. They had 59% possession to Scotland’s 41%, completed the stronger passing volume with 601 passes to 388, and outshot Scotland 12 to 6.

The most damaging number for Scotland was the blank in shots on target. Morocco forced 2 efforts on goal and won 5 corners to Scotland’s 1, while the Tartan Army never made the pressure count with a clean finish at goal.

Saibari almost stretched the lead after the break when his deflected effort hit the bar following Bilal El Khannouss’ run and low cross. El Khannouss then went close from an Achraf Hakimi near-post corner, with Gunn again involved as Scotland stayed within reach.

Scotland rallies but Morocco survives late

The final 15 minutes brought Scotland’s best spell, with John McGinn, Ben Gannon-Doak and Scott McTominay pushing Morocco back. But the equaliser never came, and Mohamed Ouahbi’s side held their line despite needing, by his own admission, greater efficiency to find a second goal.

Morocco now sit second in Group C on 4 points, level with Brazil but behind on goal difference, while Scotland remain third on 3 points. The pressure rolls into 25 June, when Morocco face Haiti and Scotland meet Brazil with their route to the top two on the line.
