SC Freiburg produced one of the greatest nights in the club’s history, defeating SC Braga 3–1 to secure a dramatic 4–3 aggregate victory and reach their first-ever UEFA Europa League final.
After trailing from the first leg, Freiburg completed a remarkable comeback in front of an electric Europa-Park Stadion crowd, with Lukas Kübler scoring twice and Johan Manzambi adding a stunning first-half strike. Braga’s late response through Pizzi Victor ensured a tense finish, but the German side held on to spark emotional celebrations across Freiburg.
The man of the match award goes to SC Freiburg's Lukas Kübler, who impressed throughout with a rating of 8.9.
The match turned early when Braga midfielder Mario Dorgeles was sent off in just the 6th minute after denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Despite playing with a numerical advantage for almost the entire match, Freiburg still had to battle through a nervy and dramatic encounter before finally sealing qualification.
Driven forward by their supporters from the opening whistle, Freiburg dominated possession with 66% of the ball and created constant pressure, finishing the match with 19 shots compared to Braga’s 14.
The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute when Lukas Kübler fired the hosts ahead, levelling the aggregate score and igniting belief around the stadium. Freiburg continued to attack relentlessly and doubled their lead just before half-time through Johan Manzambi, whose brilliant curling finish sent the home fans into delirium.
At that stage, Freiburg looked fully in control and on course for Istanbul. However, Braga remained dangerous on the counterattack and nearly found a way back before the break.
The decisive moment appeared to arrive in the 72nd minute when Kübler scored his second goal of the night, giving Freiburg breathing space and putting them firmly in command of the tie.
Yet the tension returned late on when Braga pulled a goal back through Pizzi Victor in the 79th minute, setting up a nervy final stretch with six minutes of stoppage time. Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu produced several important saves to preserve the aggregate lead as the stadium held its breath.
When the final whistle finally arrived, emotions exploded inside the Europa-Park Stadion. Fans stormed the pitch, players embraced in tears, and head coach Julian Schuster struggled to contain his emotions after guiding Freiburg to the biggest achievement in the club’s history.
Forward Igor Matanović later revealed he believed Freiburg would win from the moment the team stepped out to warm up, praising the atmosphere created by the supporters and describing the squad as “a family.”
There were four yellow cards shown in a fiercely contested semi-final, but Freiburg’s determination and attacking intensity ultimately proved too much for Braga.
The victory sends SC Freiburg to Istanbul, where they will face Aston Villa in the Europa League final on 20 May. While many may consider Villa favourites because of their Premier League quality and European experience under Unai Emery, Freiburg have already shown throughout this unforgettable campaign that they are capable of making history.
