Santos walked into Sao Paulo's Morumbi with their second-choice goalkeeper in goal and walked out with their first league win at the ground since 2021. Gabriel Barbosa scored twice, Diógenes made seven saves and Philippe Coutinho started the move for the winner on his Santos debut. The 2-1 comeback left a crowd of 43,398 jeering its own team.
On paper, this was Sao Paulo's night. They had 60% of the ball, 20 shots to nine and 14 corners to one. The scoreboard told a different story, and it was written by a striker who had gone four years without scoring against them.
Both sides were reshuffled before kick-off in this rescheduled fixture. Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rafael suffered a lumbar spine injury in the warm-up, forcing Carlos Coronel into a last-minute start. Santos turned to Diógenes in place of the injured Gabriel Brazão.
Luciano's VAR penalty undone within two minutes
The opening goal needed a second look. At 31 minutes, a VAR review confirmed a penalty after Lucas Veríssimo pulled down Ryan Francisco in the box, and Veríssimo was shown a yellow card.
Luciano stepped up at 34 minutes and drove a left-footed penalty firmly high down the middle. The Morumbi had its lead. It lasted two minutes.
Ryan Francisco was off the pitch receiving treatment when Santos struck back, a sequence that fuelled debate afterwards. Gonzalo Escobar curled a cross in from the left wing and Gabriel Barbosa glanced a header into the far corner at 36 minutes, ending four years without a goal against Sao Paulo.
For all the territory and corners that followed, Sao Paulo never led again. The equaliser turned a night they were controlling into one they spent chasing.
Coutinho and Everton tee up Gabriel Barbosa's winner
The goal that decided the match arrived at 54 minutes, and it began with a debutant. Philippe Coutinho, on as a substitute in his first competitive match in nearly eight months, turned in midfield and fed Everton, who squared the ball into the box.
Gabriel Barbosa did the rest: a touch to control, a move away from Rafael Tolói and a low left-footed finish. It took him to 23 goals across all competitions this season.
Coutinho's own assessment was measured: "Minha volta foi um pouco difícil, mas acho que aguentei bem" — his return, he said, had been a little difficult, but he felt he had coped well. Within minutes of stepping on, he had already shaped the result.
Diógenes stonewalls Sao Paulo's 20-shot barrage
What came next was a siege that never paid off. Sao Paulo put eight shots on target to Santos' four, yet only the penalty beat Diógenes, who made seven saves standing in for the injured Brazão.
Santos, by contrast, did more with less. Nine shots, four on target, two goals, both from the same player — an efficiency that made Sao Paulo's volume look hollow.
The corner count, 14 to one, shows how deep Santos were pushed. It also exposes the home side's problem: all that pressure produced no second goal, and late in the second half the home fans jeered what they saw as a toothless attack.
Santos paid for their resistance in bookings, collecting three yellow cards to Sao Paulo's one. Dorival Júnior's verdict on the defeat was blunt: "O que vem acontecendo com o São Paulo, em muitos momentos, é inexplicável" — what has been happening to São Paulo, at many moments, is inexplicable.
Santos climb as pressure builds on Sao Paulo
The win leaves Santos eighth on 41 points, with 11 wins, eight draws and nine defeats, and pushes them into Copa Libertadores contention. It also equalled the club's record of five consecutive away victories in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
Sao Paulo are tenth on 36 points, five behind, with 12 defeats this season — more than they have wins. They have not beaten Santos in the last three meetings in our records, and this one will sting most: the team that won almost every count except the one that matters went home with nothing.
Dorival's "inexplicable" is the word that will follow Sao Paulo into the weeks ahead. Santos leave with a striker in form, a stand-in goalkeeper who rose to the night and Coutinho back on a pitch after eight months away.
