One disallowed goal, one early injury and a chorus of boos at the final whistle turned Poland's first night in UEFA Nations League League B into a familiar kind of frustration. The 0-0 draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina at PGE Narodowy on Friday left Jan Urban's side with a point but little comfort, extending a scoring drought that now carries real political weight around the national team.
The hosts controlled the ball for long stretches — 57% possession and 14 total shots to Bosnia & Herzegovina's nine — yet could not find a way through a disciplined visiting defence. Four shots on target told the story: Poland saw plenty of the ball, but rarely made goalkeeper Marcin Bułka's opposite number work with genuine urgency.
Kamiński injury forces early reshuffle
The night took an immediate turn in the 24th minute when Jakub Kamiński was forced off with an adductor problem. Urban confirmed afterwards that the winger would miss the remainder of the four-game international window, stripping Poland of one of their most direct attacking outlets just as the new shape was bedding in.
Urban had entered this fixture under severe pressure from supporters and the federation after missing out on the World Cup, and he responded with a tactical shift away from a back five to a four-man defensive line. The structure looked secure for long periods, but the absence of a cutting edge undermined the entire project.
Tabaković foul wipes out late drama
The match nearly swung decisively in the 75th minute when Bosnia & Herzegovina put the ball in the net off Matty Cash. Referee Anastasios Papapetrou immediately ruled it out, penalising Haris Tabaković for a foul on Bułka before the ball crossed the line. It was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock, and the reprieve did little to spark Poland into life.
Even Robert Lewandowski, making his 168th senior appearance and his first since moving to MLS side Chicago Fire, could not bend the contest to his will. Captain on the night, he cut an isolated figure at times and left without a clear sight of goal. This was the first time Poland have failed to score under Urban, and the supporters made their feelings heard at full time.
Debutants show promise amid stagnation
Wiktor Nowak earned his senior international debut as a halftime substitute, the 22-year-old Slavia Prague midfielder adding eagerness in the middle of the park. Kacper Potulski, the 18-year-old FSV Mainz centre-back, started and handled the occasion with composure, while Bosnia & Herzegovina defender Zinedin Smajlović also won his first senior cap on a night when defenders largely had the upper hand.
Urban was pragmatic in his assessment. "Niestety mamy tylko remis, ale z przebiegu drugiej połowy i tego, jak to widziałem, powinniśmy chociaż jedną bramkę strzelić," he said, acknowledging the second-half pressure but not hiding the disappointment. "Natomiast faktycznie, jeśli masz czyste konto, to zawsze masz punkt i na pewno jakieś sytuacje stworzysz."
Poland sit second in the early standings with one point from one match, level with Bosnia & Herzegovina in third. The draw leaves both teams without a win in the section, but the pressure is clearly tilted towards the home side. A first competitive test in League B after relegation from League A demanded conviction; what it produced was a goalless stalemate and the sound of discontent from the stands.
The clean sheet offers a foundation, but the lack of goalscoring threat raises urgent questions for the remaining fixtures in this window. Urban now has to rebuild cohesion without Kamiński and find a way to turn territorial control into tangible reward. Another night like this could quickly turn frustration into something more damaging for both the coach and the federation's patience.
