Kylian Mbappé’s 70th-minute penalty finally broke Paraguay’s bunker and turned the Paraguay France game into a 1-0 World Cup escape for France in Philadelphia. The Paraguay France result was narrow; the control behind it was not.

In extreme heat, with 42 degrees Celsius measured at kickoff and 69.7 on seats inside Lincoln Financial Field, this was never going to be elegant. FIFA had warned before the match of a high risk of delay or interruption, and the game began after a slight delay.

France turns heat and pressure into control

France took the ball from the opening minutes and forced Paraguay deep into the low block described in the live notes as a parked bus. At half-time, France had 80% possession but no shot on target, and neither side had worked a goalkeeper.

That made the first half historically sterile: according to the notes, it was the first World Cup knockout match since France against Brazil in the 2006 quarterfinal to reach half-time without a shot on target. It was not pretty, but it was tense.

The second half finally gave France more edge. Orlando Gill made his first real save in the 54th minute from Manu Koné’s long-range strike, and France’s corner count kept climbing as pressure built.

The decisive move came after Désiré Doué, introduced for Bradley Barcola, went down in the area in the 65th minute. After a long VAR review, referee Ilgiz Tantashev pointed to the spot, and Mbappé sent the penalty to his right in the 70th minute.

Paraguay’s resistance lasted, but their attacking threat barely appeared. They finished with 24% possession, five shots and only one on target, while France had 76% possession, 15 shots, five on target and 11 corners.

Gill still denied Mbappé late, including two saves in the 90+6th minute, before France closed out the tie. Paraguay are out after reaching this stage by eliminating Germany in the Round of 32, while France advance to a quarterfinal against Morocco, a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semifinal.
