A five-goal surge sent Netherlands top of Group F as Sweden were crushed 5-1 at NRG Stadium, a scoreline that looked brutal even against a surprisingly even statistical sheet.

Brobbey punishes Sweden’s slow start

Netherlands turned the match in their favour almost immediately. Brian Brobbey struck in the 5th minute after helping bring down a long ball before Cody Gakpo’s sharp delivery from the left was finished from close range.

Sweden answered with pressure rather than control. Viktor Gyökeres tested Bart Verbruggen, but the Dutch doubled the lead in the 17th minute when Denzel Dumfries drove a low ball in from the right and Brobbey again arrived in the decisive space.

The tension of the half came from Sweden’s refusal to disappear. Yasin Ayari missed a strong counter-attacking opening in the 29th minute, Gyökeres kept forcing Verbruggen into work, and a Lagerbielke goal in the 45th minute was correctly ruled out for offside.

Gakpo turns pressure into punishment

The restart killed the contest. Gakpo made it 3-0 in the 47th minute from Dumfries’ second assist, then struck again in the 54th after a quick break, driving a powerful finish into the near corner.

Anthony Elanga, introduced with Lucas Bergvall and Erdal Rakip Zeneli, gave Sweden a reply in the 59th minute from Alexander Isak’s assist. But it was only a pause in the damage before Crysencio Summerville, on at half-time, ran through in the 89th minute and rolled in the fifth.

Netherlands seize Group F control

The numbers explain why this was a statement of efficiency rather than a one-way procession. Possession was only 52%-48%, shots on target were level at 7-7, and Sweden actually led total shots 15-10 and corners 4-2.

Netherlands, though, were sharper in the moments that mattered: 397 passes to Sweden’s 350, fewer fouls at 9 to 12, and no yellow cards while Sweden collected 3. The win leaves the Dutch 1st on 4 points, with Sweden still 2nd on 3 before Japan and Tunisia shape the next turn of Group F.
