Luis Romo turned a goalkeeper's spill into qualification, firing Mexico past South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara and into the World Cup round of 32. The 50th-minute finish made Mexico the first side to secure a place in the knockout stage at the 2026 tournament.

Mexico endure flat start before Romo punishes Kim

Before the breakthrough, the first half at Estadio Akron had offered more tension than clarity. South Korea came closest in the 16th minute when Son Heung-min lifted the ball over Raúl Rangel and Edson Álvarez cleared from the line, only for the assistant referee to raise the flag for offside.

Mexico's best opening before the interval arrived in the 20th minute. Roberto Alvarado crossed from the right and Julian Quiñones headed from seven metres, but Kim Seung-gyu produced a sharp save in a half that ended goalless and was greeted by whistles from the home crowd.

The game changed almost immediately after the restart. In the 50th minute, after a delivery from the left, Raúl Jiménez headed goalward, Kim collided with a teammate and dropped the ball, and Romo reacted first to send the rebound into an empty net.

Rangel protects Mexico as Korea control possession

South Korea had more of the ball, finishing with 57% possession and 478 completed passes to Mexico's 351, but that control rarely became pressure on the scoreboard. Mexico, with only 43% possession, still produced eight shots to Korea's seven and put four on target to Korea's two.

Kim partly repaired his error in the 75th minute by denying Jiménez from a promising position, keeping South Korea alive. Their clearest chance to level came in the 87th minute, when Cho Gue-sung was left alone in the six-yard box after a cross from the left, only for Rangel to make the save that protected the win.

The margins were narrow elsewhere too: South Korea won the only corner and received both yellow cards, while Mexico committed nine fouls to Korea's seven. It underlined the pattern of the night: Korea carried the ball more often, Mexico carried the greater threat.

Mexico seize Group lead as Korea face pressure

Mexico now lead the group with six points from two wins, while South Korea remain second with three points after one win and one defeat. With head-to-head the first tiebreaker, South Korea cannot finish above Mexico if the teams end level, and Czechia and South Africa sit behind them on one point after their 1-1 draw.
