Julián Quiñones turned Mexico vs Ecuador into a home statement, scoring the opener and setting up the second as Mexico won 2-0 to move into the World Cup last 16. A night delayed by an hour because of a thunderstorm at Estadio Banorte was settled before half-time, before Piero Hincapié’s 90th-minute red card added a late edge.

FIFA had considered removing hydration breaks to recover lost time, according to the match notes, but that idea was dropped. Once play began, Mexico made the delay feel irrelevant.

Mexico seize control through Quiñones burst

Mexico pressed hard from the start and created the sharper early danger. Raúl Jiménez headed just wide at the far post, and 17-year-old Mora then almost found the far corner from a difficult angle.

Ecuador’s warning came in the 18th minute when Yeboah escaped near the edge of the area and struck the outside of the post. Four minutes later, Quiñones punished them: he collected the ball in his own half, carried it around forty metres and hit the top corner for 1-0, with the goal confirmed after an offside check.

The second came in the 31st minute after Mexico won the ball in a dangerous area. Jiménez and Quiñones exchanged a one-two, and Jiménez finished powerfully to make it 2-0 before the break.

Ecuador hold the ball but Mexico protect lead

Ecuador changed at half-time, sending on Preciado and Medina for Ordóñez and Franco, and eventually had 57% possession and 8 corners. Yet that control produced only 1 shot on target, while Mexico, with 43% of the ball, still led the shot count 15 to 7 and put 3 efforts on target.

Mexico’s clearest second-half chance came in the 67th minute, when Montes headed from a corner and Galíndez reacted well. Ecuador’s best opening was snuffed out when Rangel came out in time to stop Rodríguez after a long ball into space.

Hincapié exits as Mexico confirm statement

Hincapié was shown a direct red card in the 90th minute after covering his mouth during a dispute with Giménez, with referee Slavko Vinčić applying FIFA’s new rule. Ecuador also collected 3 yellow cards, while Mexico had none.

The result leaves Mexico ranked 1 with 9 points from 3 wins, their form reading WWW with 6 goals scored, 0 conceded and 3 clean sheets. Ecuador stand 3rd on 4 points, while Mexico now wait for the winner of England against DR Congo.
