John McGinn’s 28th-minute deflection pushed Scotland from pressure into control, delivering a 1-0 win over Haiti and a first World Cup victory since beating Sweden 2-1 in 1990.
McGinn sparks Scotland breakthrough
Scotland had already warned Haiti in the 17th minute, when captain Scott McTominay got loose and struck a shot that clipped the top of the post. Eleven minutes later, Che Adams’ miss in the box bounced off goalkeeper Johny Placide into open space, and McGinn’s shot from 13 yards ricocheted off a defender and in.
The goal sent Scotland in 0-1 up at half-time and changed the feel of a match played in front of a strong Tartan Army presence at Gillette Stadium. McGinn said the Scotland fans could be felt when the ball hit the net, while Steve Clarke framed the result as a release for a side back at the tournament for the first time since 1998.
Hanley anchors Scotland as Haiti push
Haiti did not lose the game through lack of control. They held 54% possession, led total shots 15 to 9, edged corners 4 to 3 and had the higher pass count, 367 to 306, but both teams put only 2 efforts on target.
That contrast made Grant Hanley’s display decisive. The Scotland centre-back played all 90 minutes, earned Vava Sport’s top rating at 7.7, and completed 46 of 50 passes for 92% accuracy, giving Scotland a calm route out while the clean sheet came under pressure.
Haiti’s clearest chances arrived late. Ruben Providence crossed for Wilson Isidor in the 74th minute, but the forward could not turn it in, and Frantzdy Pierrot headed wide of the left side in the 84th.
Scotland seize Group C lead
The edge was protected aggressively: Scotland committed 21 fouls and collected 3 yellow cards, while Haiti committed 23 fouls and saw 1 yellow. Sébastien Migné’s warning that one oversight can be punished matched the numbers, because Haiti’s volume never became a goal.
With Brazil and Morocco drawing 1-1 earlier in the day, Scotland moved to rank 1 on 3 points in Group C. Haiti sit rank 4 with 0 points and, after only their second World Cup appearance following 1974, remain in search of a first World Cup point; Scotland stay in Boston to face Morocco on Friday, while Haiti next meet Brazil in Philadelphia.
