One deflected strike from Dimitrios Kourbelis turned a night of German dominance into a historic Greek statement, as Jürgen Klopp's first home match in charge of Die Mannschaft ended in a 0-1 defeat at the WWK Arena.
The decisive moment arrived in the 74th minute. Christos Tzolis attacked down the left wing before Josha Vagnoman's interception inadvertently rolled the ball toward the edge of the penalty box. Substitute Kourbelis met it with a 16-meter drive that took a heavy deflection off Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, completely wrong-footing Alexander Nübel in goal.
It was Greece's only shot on target across the entire 90 minutes. Germany had 16 attempts, five of them on target, eight corners, and 76 per cent possession. The hosts controlled the ball, controlled the territory, and still left Augsburg with nothing.
Klopp's Experimental Lineup Backfires
Klopp made five changes to his starting lineup as part of an expanded squad rotation plan, handing Hoffenheim attacking midfielder Bambasé Conté his senior international debut from the start. The absence of Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz through injury compounded the sense of a side still searching for its rhythm under the new coach.
Germany are now winless in their opening two Nations League matches this season. The sell-out crowd of 28,945 — including more than 6,000 travelling Greek supporters — witnessed the return of 10,000 standing terrace tickets for a German men's senior international, but the atmosphere could not mask a blunt attacking display.
Mavropanos Anchors Greece's Historic Defence
Konstantinos Mavropanos was the standout figure in a Greek back line that absorbed pressure for long stretches without collapsing. His reading of the game and willingness to step into passing lanes gave Greece a platform to survive Germany's territorial monopoly.
The result was not merely a smash-and-grab. Greece took sole possession of first place in UEFA Nations League Group A2 with six points from two games, while Germany sit third on a single point. This was also Greece's first victory against Germany in their history after failing to win any of their previous 10 meetings.
For Klopp, the honeymoon is already over. Two matches, no wins, and a home defeat that raises uncomfortable questions about how quickly his ideas are translating to this group. For Greece, the momentum is undeniable — two wins, maximum points, and a genuine claim to be the group's most efficient side.
