Kylian Mbappé’s 45th-minute finish broke Sweden’s resistance and turned France’s Round of 32 night into a World Cup warning, a 3-0 win built on control as much as cutting edge.

France had needed time to accelerate at MetLife Stadium, and Sweden did register the first shot on target in the 3rd minute through Alexander Isak. Mike Maignan dealt with it, and from there the game steadily bent toward the French attack.

Mbappé breaks Sweden before the interval

After roughly 15 minutes, France began to pin Sweden back. Jacob Zetterström saved from Lucas Digne, Bradley Barcola missed after a solo run, and Mbappé had a 20th-minute goal ruled out for offside after Victor Lindelöf had stepped up in time.

The pressure kept building. Adrien Rabiot was denied after a Mbappé pass, Mbappé hit the post in the 32nd minute, and Michael Olise’s overhead kick also came back off the frame before Ousmane Dembélé sent the rebound wide.

Just as Sweden seemed close to reaching half-time level, Mbappé changed the match. After Olise and Dembélé combined, the France captain drove in from the left and finished into the far side of the net for 1-0.

Barcola doubles France control after Olise pass

France restarted with the same force and needed less than eight minutes of the second half to stretch the lead. Olise released Barcola into a clear chance in the 53rd minute, and Barcola finished for 2-0.

Olise then chased his own first World Cup goal, but Zetterström saved in the 61st minute, another effort was blocked in the 65th, and the Sweden goalkeeper produced a major stop against him in the 72nd.

Two minutes later, Olise returned to creating. His pass behind Sweden’s defence found Mbappé’s run, and the finish made it 3-0 in the 74th minute.

France turns dominance into title warning

The France Sweden World Cup numbers matched the feeling of the night: 61% possession, 25 shots to 8, 12 on target to 3, 9 corners to 1, and 485 passes to Sweden’s 280. Even the foul count, 14 to 10, could not obscure how much of the match France spent dictating territory and rhythm.

Mbappé’s second goal was his sixth at this World Cup. It also moved his World Cup total to 18, one behind Lionel Messi’s 19, and made him the record holder for World Cup matches with more than one goal, now on seven.

France also became the first team to score at least three goals in five consecutive World Cup matches, a run that began in the 2022 final. Across their last four matches at this tournament, including this win over Sweden, their goal difference is 13-2.

The consequence is clear: France advance to face Paraguay on Saturday, 4 July, at 23:00 CET in Philadelphia. The standings context underlines the gap, with France rank 1 on 9 points from 3W, while Sweden sit rank 3 on 4 points from 1W, 1D and 1L.
