Pedro Porro’s finish turned Spain’s command into a final berth, as a 2-0 win over France in Dallas made them the first World Cup finalists.
Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty opened the semi-final before Porro struck after the break, ending France’s run of two consecutive World Cup finals. Spain will now face Argentina or England for the trophy, while France meet the other semi-final loser in the third-place match.
Oyarzabal punishes Digne’s error
Spain took control early and earned the decisive first-half opening in the 20th minute. Lucas Digne failed to clear a cross, Lamine Yamal took possession and Digne’s challenge brought a penalty.
Oyarzabal converted in the 22nd minute despite Mike Maignan choosing the right direction. It was his fifth goal of the tournament, making him the third Spain player to score at least five times at a single World Cup after Emilio Butragueño in 1986 and David Villa in 2010.
France’s problems deepened when William Saliba departed injured in the 30th minute, with Lacroix replacing him. Spain held their advantage through half-time, while France struggled to turn their possession into a threat.
Porro seals Spain’s control
Porro made it 2-0 in the 58th minute after exchanging passes with Dani Olmo, who managed to release him despite Dayot Upamecano’s challenge. The Spain defender went through on Maignan and finished precisely for his second goal of the World Cup.
Yamal had a third ruled out for offside three minutes later. France finally pushed after the second goal, but their best opening came in the 81st minute, when Unai Simón recovered to save Désiré Doué’s shot after his own headed clearance had left the goal exposed.
Spain end France’s final run
The France-Spain match was tighter on the statistical sheet than the scoreline’s control suggested: Spain had 51% possession and both sides had 10 shots. France registered three efforts on target to Spain’s two and won seven corners to one, but Spain owned the moments that settled the semi-final.
Spain have reached their second World Cup final. France’s defeat means West Germany from 1982 to 1990 and Brazil from 1994 to 2002 remain the only teams to reach three successive World Cup finals.
