Mbappé’s late audacity turned France’s second-half surge into a warning, sealing a 3-1 World Cup opening win over Senegal at MetLife Stadium. A goalless first half had asked awkward questions of France; by full time, Kylian Mbappé had answered them twice.
France awaken after Senegal threaten
Senegal made sure this was not a procession. They threatened as early as the 2nd minute, saw Nicolas Jackson hit the post in the 26th, and forced Mike Maignan to deal with Sadio Mané’s effort from 20 metres before Ismaila Sarr missed a major chance from close range before half-time.
France had more of the ball, finishing with 54% possession, but the first half did not feel like control. Senegal’s organisation kept them level, and the 0-0 interval reflected a match still waiting for France to find a higher gear.
Mbappé punishes Senegal after Faghani stands firm
The shift came after the break, driven by the kind of vertical passing that pierced Senegal’s back line. Michael Olise tested Édouard Mendy, Mbappé was denied when clean through, and referee Alireza Faghani then stood firm after a VAR check, deciding not to award a penalty when Mbappé went down under contact from Mané.
