The red card after six minutes was supposed to end the contest. Instead, it ended Espanyol.
Elche played 84 minutes with ten men at the RCDE Stadium on Friday night, yet walked away with a 3-1 victory built on a devastating two-goal burst from Fer Niño and one of the most disciplined defensive performances of the La Liga season so far.
Niño's quickfire brace silences Cornellà
Federico Redondo's early sending-off — upgraded to a straight red after referee Jon Ander González Esteban consulted the pitchside monitor, having initially not sanctioned the last-defender pull on Bryan Zaragoza — threatened to dismantle Elche's evening before it had truly begun.
Niño had other ideas. In the 26th minute, Roy Revivo delivered from the left and the striker applied a running first-time volley that flew into the far corner. Three minutes later, Revivo was the provider again, and Niño struck with the same ruthless precision to make it 0-2 at half-time.
Espanyol push back but Valera seals the breakaway
Espanyol dominated the ball — 66 per cent possession and 23 shots told the story of a side camped in the opposition half — but they rarely found clean openings. Elche's six shots on target, against the hosts' four, reflected the visiting side's efficiency on the counter.
The deficit was reduced in the 72nd minute when substitute Marcos Fernández challenged for a cross inside the six-yard box, forcing Víctor Chust into an accidental deflection past his own goalkeeper. Any hope of a comeback died six minutes later, as Germán Valera raced clear of the back line on the break and lifted a delicate chip over the advancing Dmitrović.
Ten-man Elche reshape the relegation picture
The result moves Elche off the bottom of the standings to 17th on five points, having collected their first win of the campaign amid a season already scarred by a heavy goals-against column. For Espanyol, a third home defeat of the season leaves them ninth on seven points and facing renewed questions about a side that produces volume without conviction.
This was not a smash-and-grab. It was a statement of survival — one that keeps Elche's season alive and leaves Espanyol searching for answers they have now failed to find at home too often.
