Mateo Chávez García’s 55th-minute finish turned Czechia vs Mexico from a tense Group A grind into a 3-0 statement, sending the co-hosts through with a perfect record and ending Czechia’s World Cup.
Chávez breaks Czechia's resistance
The first half had warned Mexico this would not be a procession. Koubek’s side carried enough threat for Denis Višinský to fire a first-time finish wide of the left post, and Czechia reached the break level despite Mexico’s early pressure.
The game changed 10 minutes after half-time. Romo played in Chávez, and the Mexico scorer kept his finish low into the bottom-left corner to ignite Estadio Azteca.
Quinones punishes Czechia's blunt pressure
Czechia kept searching, but the numbers exposed the problem. They had 51% possession, 13 shots and five corners, yet only one effort on target.
Mexico were colder where it mattered. In the 61st minute, after Holes’ clearance rebounded off Sanchez, J. Quinones prodded in his second goal of the tournament, underlining Mexico’s five shots on target from 11 attempts.
Mexico seals perfect Group A control
The contrast stayed sharp: passing was almost identical at 325 to 329, Mexico committed 13 fouls to Czechia’s 9 and received the only yellow card, but their defensive control never cracked. A. Fidalgo, sent on in the second half, added the final cut in stoppage time, finding the top-left corner after Alvarado’s lay-off.
Guillermo Ochoa also came on for a sixth World Cup appearance as Mexico finished Group A with three wins, six goals scored, none conceded and nine points. South Africa also advanced after beating South Korea 1-0, while South Korea finished third on three points and Czechia ended bottom with one point, six conceded and no win.
