A brutal second-half challenge left Ismaël Koné facing surgery, turning Canada’s historic 6-0 World Cup win over Qatar into a night split between celebration and shock.
Larin ignites Canada before Qatar unravel
Canada had already taken control before the match became chaotic. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Jonathan David struck in the 29th, and Qatar’s task became steeper when H. Al Amin was sent off in the 33rd minute.
David added Canada’s third on 45 minutes, sending Jesse Marsch’s side into half-time 3-0 ahead. The scoreline matched the feel of the game: Canada finished with 79% possession, 30 shots and 18 corners, while Qatar managed only 2 shots and none on target.
Koné injury shadows Canada statement
The mood changed after A. O. Madibo’s dangerous challenge on Koné, with the Qatar midfielder shown a red card in the 53rd minute. Journalist notes said Koné was stretchered off after the second-half incident, and Fabrizio Romano reported a fractured fibula, with information also indicating a tibia fracture, and an expected absence of four to five months.
Marsch said Koné was in hospital being prepared for surgery, with his family, including his mother, alongside him. Nathan Saliba, who replaced Koné, then scored Canada’s fourth in the 64th minute and lifted his injured teammate’s shirt in tribute.
David fires Canada into control of group
Qatar, down to nine men, could not halt the damage. M. Al Mannai’s own goal made it 5-0 in the 75th minute before David completed his hat-trick in the 90th, a performance that earned him Man of the Match with a 9 rating.
David now sits alongside Lionel Messi on three goals at the top of the tournament scoring chart, while Larin is among the group on two. Canada are rank 1 on 4 points after their first World Cup win, while Qatar are rank 4 on 1 point after a night defined by pressure, indiscipline and concern for Koné.
