Erling Haaland turned Brazil Norway football into his own late show, scoring in the 79th and 90th minutes to fire Norway past Brazil 2-1 and into the World Cup quarter-finals.

The night at MetLife Stadium finished with Norway celebrating a famous knockout win, Brazil eliminated, and Haaland up to 7 goals at this World Cup, level at the top of the scoring race with Messi and Mbappé.

Nyland denies Brazil after Berg threatens early

Norway thought they had struck in the 3rd minute when Berg finished, but the move was pulled back for an earlier offside against Sorloth. Brazil then had the first great chance to take control after Ajer brought down Cunha and Ismail Elfath awarded a penalty following a VAR review.

Bruno Guimaraes took it in the 14th minute, but Nyland read the shot and kept the game at 0-0. Brazil kept swinging before the break, with Vinicius denied from close range, while Alisson answered at the other end by stopping Odegaard in first-half stoppage time.

Brazil’s pressure did not fade after half-time. Endrick replaced Cunha in the 58th minute and, one minute later, raced clear from Vinicius’ pass only to miss the target from around 10 metres.

The numbers captured the strange rhythm: Norway had 67% possession and 616 passes to Brazil’s 277, yet Brazil produced 14 shots to Norway’s 9. Norway were sharper where it counted, edging shots on target 5-4, with corners level at 5-5 and fouls close at 7-6.

Then Haaland arrived. In the 79th minute, Schjelderup crossed from the left and Haaland attacked the five-metre area to head Norway in front. Brazil almost forced a response when Ajer nearly turned into his own net, but Nyland pushed the ball onto the post.

The decisive blow came in the 90th minute, again from the left side. Haaland received the ball on the edge of the area and drove a fierce finish beyond Alisson for 2-0.

Brazil’s final surge brought only a reduction. After Ostigaard fouled Casemiro, Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty in the 90+10th minute, having earlier been booked in a heated finale.

Norway move on to face the winner of Mexico and England, continuing their remarkable unbeaten run against the South American giant. Brazil, five-time world champions, are out.
