One low strike from Nestory Irankunda turned Australia’s tense opener into the World Cup’s biggest shock so far, and Connor Metcalfe finished the job in a 2-0 win over Türkiye at BC Place.
The scoreline was clean; the match was anything but. Türkiye returned to the World Cup after 24 years, controlled 72% possession and fired 30 shots, but Australia survived the storm with a defensive display built around Patrick Beach, who was like an octopus in goal with eight saves.
Irankunda ignites Australia’s shock
Irankunda broke through in the 27th minute, less than a minute after the first-half hydration break, driving a low shot while pursued by three defenders. His corner-flag celebration echoed Tim Cahill, and the 20-year-old became Australia’s youngest-ever World Cup scorer.
The goal gave Australia a 1-0 half-time lead despite Türkiye pushing the game through volume. Abdulkerim Bardakcı forced Beach into a save from distance soon after, a warning of what the Socceroos would have to absorb.
Beach smothers Türkiye pressure
Kenan Yildiz came on at half-time, and Arda Güler tested Beach with a dangerous 57th-minute free kick, but the goalkeeper again held firm. Beach’s 8.7 Vava Sport rating reflected the contradiction of his night: decisive shot-stopping, a clean sheet across 95 minutes, and mixed distribution of 14 completed passes from 34 attempts at 41% accuracy.
The wider numbers made Australia’s win feel even more severe for Türkiye. Türkiye led shots on target 8-4, completed 628 passes to Australia’s 198, and edged corners 6-5; Australia committed 12 fouls to Türkiye’s 4, while Türkiye received the only yellow card.
Metcalfe punishes Türkiye turnover
Australia needed one more break, and it arrived in the 75th minute when Metcalfe capitalized on Ismail Yüksek’s turnover to double the lead. It was the clinical ending to a performance based on resistance, timing and punishment.
The result puts Australia 2nd in the standings on 3 points, with Türkiye 3rd on 0. Australia now move toward a meeting with co-hosts the United States in Seattle, while Türkiye face pressure immediately as they prepare for Paraguay.
