Hossam Abdelmaguid’s decisive kick turned Egypt’s long wait into history, sealing a 4-2 shootout win after a 1-1 Australia Egypt game in Dallas.
Australia’s first World Cup penalty shootout ended in pain at AT&T Stadium, where Harry Souttar fired over and 18-year-old Lucas Herrington struck the bar. Egypt were flawless from the spot through Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Abdelmaguid.
Ashour shocks Australia with early Egypt breakthrough
Egypt struck after 13 minutes when Emam Ashour put them ahead, sending the Pharaohs into half-time 1-0 up in their first knockout match since 1934. Australia had threatened early through Cristian Volpato, whose 25-yard effort clipped the top of the crossbar after five minutes.
The numbers captured the tension rather than a one-way match. Egypt had 58% possession, 614 passes, four shots on target and seven corners, but Australia still produced 16 total shots to Egypt’s 14 while forcing only one save on target.
Australia fights back as Hany own goal changes tie
Omar Marmoush missed a major chance within 10 seconds of the restart, rolling wide when through. Egypt were punished in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany diverted Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick past Mostafa Shobeir for the equaliser.
That own goal was Hany’s second of the tournament and the 13th own goal of these finals, surpassing the 12 recorded in 2018. Australia then needed Patrick Beach’s late intervention, with the keeper denying Ramy Rabia’s 94th-minute header from a Salah cross to force extra time.
Salah steadies Egypt before Argentina test
Mat Ryan replaced Beach before penalties, but Egypt’s run was perfect. Salah, who produced an audacious Panenka, helped turn a tense night into Egypt’s first World Cup knockout-stage win.
The Pharaohs advance to face Argentina on 7 July at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA. Australia exit after a third defeat in as many World Cup knockout matches.
