Aston Villa supporters unveiled a tifo before kick-off to welcome European nights back to Villa Park. By full time they had seen the greatest one in the club's history. The 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahçe is Villa's biggest win in European competition and the widest margin of victory of Unai Emery's reign.

The night had a birthday, a royal in the directors' box and an away end in open revolt against its own coach. It also had an oddity: the beaten side had more of the ball.

N. Jackson9.7

Nicolas Jackson was the decisive figure on a record-breaking night, earning a 9.71 rating for a brace that turned an early lead into a rout before half-time. His movement and composure gave Villa a cutting edge Fenerbahçe never managed to contain, laying the platform for everything that followed after the break.

Manzambi marks 21st birthday with first Champions League goal

Johan Manzambi turned 21 on the day, and his family were in the stands to watch him open the scoring. Twelve minutes in, John McGinn worked a short corner and Fenerbahçe could only half-clear his cross. Manzambi struck from inside the box, and a heavy deflection off Milan Škriniar carried the ball into the net.

It was his first Champions League goal and his second in all competitions this season, from only five appearances. Up in the directors' box, Prince William was punching the air. At one point he borrowed McGinn's trademark goggles celebration.

Jackson punishes Fenerbahçe errors with first-half double

On 31 minutes Boubacar Kamara won possession high up the pitch and found Nicolas Jackson. The forward rolled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Eight minutes later Jackson exchanged passes with Ross Barkley and struck low again from the edge of the box. At 3-0 by half-time, the contest was effectively settled before the interval.

Jackson now has five goals in eight appearances this season and has scored in four of Villa's last six matches. Both of his goals came from Villa winning the ball or moving it quickly. That was the pattern of a night on which Fenerbahçe's 55% possession bought them nothing.

Barkley double and Abraham tap-in complete Villa's rout

Fenerbahçe's hopes of a respectable second half lasted until the 68th minute. İsmail Yüksek gave the ball away and Manzambi was fouled. Barkley sent the penalty into the opposite corner.

Four minutes later Barkley had his second. Ibrahim Mbaye teed him up, and his first-time strike from the edge of the area deflected off Bartuğ Elmaz, wrong-footing Ederson. The goal took the midfielder to three for the season in all competitions, from ten appearances.

Substitute Tammy Abraham added the sixth in the 90th minute, tapping into an empty net on the goal line from Alysson Edward's assist. It was his third goal of the campaign in eight appearances. His celebration, an eagle gesture referencing his Beşiktaş ties, provoked a backlash from Turkish supporters online.

The shot count explains the scoreline better than the possession figure does. Villa had 45% of the ball but fired 20 shots, 11 of them on target. Fenerbahçe produced 15 attempts yet found the target only four times. They had control of the ball without threat, against a side that turned every loose pass into danger.

The win also made Villa only the third English club this century, after Manchester United and Manchester City, to win 11 consecutive European home fixtures.

Fenerbahçe fans turn on Kartal as Villa climb to second

Mason Greenwood was playing his first match on English soil since January 2022, and he was booed and jeered on virtually every touch. By the closing stages, however, the loudest anger inside Villa Park was coming from the away end.

Around 1,800 Fenerbahçe supporters had sung loudly in the early stages. As the deficit grew, they turned on their own side, chanting "İstifa Kartal" (Kartal resign) and telling the players to take off their shirts and leave. Mattéo Guendouzi and Oğuz Aydın were booked in a match that referee Ivan Kruzliak handled without significant controversy.

The Turkish media reacted with fury and embarrassment. Outlets branded the display a total capitulation short of Champions League quality and put İsmail Kartal's tactical structure, and his players' stream of unforced individual errors, under intense scrutiny. In England, the focus was on Villa's clinical finishing and their rediscovered sharpness after an underwhelming start to the home campaign in the league.

The table reflects the gulf. Villa have six points from two games, a perfect start that puts them second. They are unbeaten in four matches in all competitions and have scored in each of their last six, with 18 goals in that stretch. Nine months after edging Fenerbahçe 1-0 away from home in January, this was superiority of an entirely different order.

Fenerbahçe fought through a play-off against Lyon in August to reach this stage. One point from two matches now leaves them 28th. Their supporters delivered their verdict from the stands, and the question is how long Kartal has to answer it.
